The band that shook the Park!
This grunge/punk trio stumbled onto the scene during late 1989 with a set consisting of 4 songs, a cheap guitar, an ashtray, and an over-abused final year at Sixth Form. It didn’t take long for the Scum Pups to become a familiar name on the local Leicester scene.

Riding on the relative success of their first EP ‘Find Out Why’, the Scum Pups began extensive one off gigs up and down country with the likes of ‘Fudge Tunnel’, ‘Silverfish’ and ‘Babes in Toyland’ adding to their reputation as the grunge kings of Leicester. This was
confirmed during 1991’s Abbey Park Festival where the
event’s security was so completely overwhelmed by the
sudden onslaught of frenzied stage diving maniacs, a
panic began to ensue. By the end of the set, the stage
was full of red shirted security staff peeling off
drunk and disorientated Leicester youth from the
marquee support poles and rigging, not to mention the
casualties from the grass in front of the stage. As a
result of this, the following years saw stage barriers erected for the first time!

The following year saw the ‘Pups grace the Melody
Maker Indie Album charts at No.17 with their album
‘Babykill’, coupled with supporting slots with the
likes of ‘Daisychainsaw’ and Leicester’s own
‘Crazyhead’. The album received a mixed response,
probably due to the poor quality of the
postproduction. Reviews ranged from 4K’s in Kerrang!,
through to 2 stars in Select magazine.

It was during the summer of 1992 that the change of
bass player took place. The 2nd EP ‘Shudder’ was
recorded, along with a promo video. Promotional
posters for the EP were to be found everywhere – even
all over the set of Eastenders’ Albert Square!

By 1993 the band was in full throws of tours in France
and the UK. Their second album ‘Sonic Sculptures’ was
released, closely followed by a collaboration EP
recording with Doncaster’s FUSE.

It wasn’t long after their tour with ‘Zodiac Mindwarp’
that the stress and strains of keeping up the momentum
began to take hold, and by the end of February of
1994, on the return journey form a tour in France with
‘Headcleaner’, the band finally split.

Midge (front man/guitarist) is currently playing in
‘ICKE’ along with Kevin Tucker who formally played
drums for ‘Huge Big Massive’. Dodge (drums) is
currently playing with ‘Grantonstar’. Little is known of Clive and Marcus (bass) other than Clive did a
degree in Archaeology and has been busy producing
books on Wartime eicestershire, and Marcus is now working for a photographic company based in
Leicestershire.
