Killing the Bland

The Most Depressing Band in Britain
A wild-eyed Scotsman in a balaclava and a snorkelling mask shouts random phrases culled from charity shop books over a wall of noise, while a blonde in a duffle-coat sings sweet monotones beside him.

Occasionally they fight, otherwise they seem oblivious to each other. An amused, bemused crowd at Charlotte looks on.

This fledgling gig wasn't the most promising start to a career. Signing on seemed infinitely more likely than getting signed.

But Prolapse - who met as students in Leicester, carved a living out of chaotic gigs, and their bulletins-from-the-leftfield record releases -
sent the critics into gushing palpitations.

"We wanted to form the most depressing band in the world," said the man behind the (snorkelling) mask, Mick Derrick.

"At first we were doing it for a laugh but then we ended up being really into it."

Bizarrely, Prolapse combined shambolic tours of Europe and beyond with a neat sideline in archaeology.

Mick said: "I dig things up and the guitarist Pat looks at them and says what they are. I just like finding things, like human remains. It always cheers you up."

The six-piece signed to Cherry Red in 1993, releasing the dour masterpiece Pointless Walks to Dismal Places before the label and band parted company.

They startled America three times, picking up more converts with each visit.

But despite that, and becoming darlings of the London music papers, Prolapse stayed in the city.

They split in 1999 after the claustrophobic third album, The italian Flag.

"I like Leicester," said Mick. "I like depressing towns and Leicester's got its depressing side."

Mick is still busy with the shovel. Co-singer Linda Steelyard, who shed the duffle coat to graduate to indie pin-up, is now a journalist on the Leicester Mercury.
