The Society welcomes everyone interested in the German Language and culture in all German speaking countries. Opportunities are provided to extend individuals' interest and contact through discussions and informal conversations in German, social evenings, formal talks, German films, summer outings and links with other organisations where an interest in German is known.
The Society was founded in September 1978 through the efforts of its Founder Chairman Colin Cook and his colleagues following an increasing interest within the adult Community in the German Language and Culture.
Members of the Society are drawn from both the City and County of Leicester. The membership stands at around 45 and German is the native language of 8 of the Society's members.
Close contact has been maintained with the British German Association (based in London) who celebrate 50 years in 2001. The relationship with the B.G.A. has been achieved through Leicester A.G.S. member participation in B.G.A. functions including attendance at the annual Seminar in Berlin.
